Welcome Home, Porter Family: A Joyful Kick-Off Celebration

Today was a special day at Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County as we officially welcomed the Porter Family to our Habitat family during a joyful Kick-Off Celebration at their future home on South Court Street.

Surrounded by friends, volunteers, sponsors, and community members, the Porters took their first steps toward homeownership — and we couldn’t be more honored to walk alongside them. These moments are at the heart of what Habitat is all about: bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

As part of the celebration, guests were invited to participate in a beloved Habitat tradition: signing the floorboards. With markers in hand, attendees wrote heartfelt messages of love, encouragement, and congratulations directly on the exposed wooden flooring. These words will remain forever embedded in the foundation of the Porters’ home — a visible reminder of the community that stands behind them.

The event was filled with energy, laughter, and the shared belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live. The Porters’ journey is just beginning, and we are thrilled to be part of it.

Over the next few months, Skylar will perform 250 hours of sweat equity, which will include homeowner education classes and working alongside our staff and volunteers as we renovate her new home. In the end, she will purchase the home from Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County with a 0% interest loan. This will allow Skylar to have a safe and affordable home, and a place for children to grow up knowing the stability provided by homeownership.

If you would like to join our mission, we welcome you to donate to help us serve more families, right here in Carroll County!

To the Porter Family: welcome home. We’re so glad you’re here.
