Homeowner Success Stories

Lindsey’s Story

Lindsey partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County in 2023. Her home is in Westminster, MD.

“The disease of addiction completely ran its course and I was left homeless, starving, and a slave to drugs.  Five years ago, I found a fellowship of people who had been through the same thing who were living clean and beautiful lives.  From that moment on, I decided that I no longer would accept my fate as an overdose victim and I would go on to follow in the footsteps of those who wanted so badly to help me.  I recognized that there were good people in the world.  For so long I thought the world was a bad place.  Throughout my recovery journey, I kept finding good people; in the recovery community, in church, and now, in Habitat for Humanity.  My life today is beyond my wildest dreams.  My mother has her daughter in her life again and I was able to bless her with a grand-daughter.  I have amazing friends, new memories, a beautiful daughter, and a relationship with my family.  I also have had the opportunity to own my own home and put blood, sweat, and tears into the process of building. The most valuable gift I have been given throughout is that I am able to help others who are suffering with the same disease that almost killed me.  I think of others first, today.  I thrive on a selfless lifestyle where I truly am happy, joyous, and free.”

Carol's Story

Carol partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County in 2008 to build her home in Westminster, MD.

“When I was approved to purchase a Habitat home I was living in my brother’s basement with my 2 year old son and before that we were homeless. When construction started, I was kept informed of everything. They had a Family Selection Committee that assisted me and I participated in the Habitat financial and homeownership education program. I loved helping with the construction of my house and even though I worked very hard, it was a lot of fun. It took me a while to really believe that this much good was happening to me.

This changed my life in every way, shape and form. It has given me and my son security. There are pictures and sayings written on the boards behind the walls in my house. My son remembers everything and will take all of that goodness into his life. Thank you for all the blessings including all the people that were involved. This process gave my life a new direction.”

Jerry partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County through the Repair Program to make necessary repairs to his home in Finksburg, MD.

“I have a volunteer from Caring Carroll who visits me weekly and he realized the disrepair of the side porch and its dangerous nature. Bill let the people at Caring Carroll know and from there they referred me to Habitat. I do not have any family in this area. Things around my house were just going downhill which created a depressive state of mind as well as safety hazards.

Everything went so fast. The amount of work done ended up being so much more than what I expected. I was so happy by the outpouring of compassion by every person that I met who worked on this project.

This process has affected my life in an immense way. It has given me a reason to live. It has totally given me hope again. I now look forward to every day and want to help others. I’m just so grateful that this has happened to me. I don’t know why I’ve been so lucky but I’m going to help other people in every way that I can. The Habitat people have become like family to me. It has given me hope and a whole new way of thinking and feeling. “
